THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS…Random thoughts as they occur
What are some of your favorite sounds?

RANDOM THOUGHTS:
TRAINS…I love the sound of trains. The rhythmic sound of the wheels passing over the joints
in the rails. The sound of the train is like the gentle sound of rain on the roof. The sound of a
train relaxes me and helps me sleep by blocking out all other distractions
A train horn is an air horn that can serve as a warning at auto crossings. If one knows the
patterns, the horn can act like a form of Morse Code to communicate with the train crew
about moving, stopping, backing up, etal. The winter I worked on the CB&Q at East Eola
Illinois, a car pulled onto the tracks ahead of an oncoming train. The lady driving was
seriously injured and her attorney sued the Burlington because his client did not hear the
horn. In court, before a jury, the attorney for the railroad asked the engineer, “Did you,
in fact, open the valve for the horn at this crossing?” The engineer answered that, “YES.
I did open the valve for the warning signal at that crossing.” The engineer was well coached.
He said, after the jury found “no fault” for the CB&Q, that he opened the valve, but it was
frozen and no sound came out.
LESSON: Don’t tell everything you know.
Another sound that I never get tired of is a cat purring. What an awesome sound! The
soft fluttering sound is a sound that I associate with contentment and feeling good.
Sometimes I wish I could purr.
Maybe the best sound in the world is a baby laughing and giggling. Followed by kids
laughing and having a great time.
People cheering at a little league game.
Breeze thru the trees. Whispering leaves
Birds singing…especially Cardinals
Cows mooing. Horses whinnying. Miss them from growing up but get to hear
them at the County Fairs
Rain. Rain on the roof of the cabin at Sevakeen. Raindrops hitting the windows
Great way to fall asleep or just take a nap
River flowing over rocks
Great singers. Great bands. Not the ones that attack my senses…see chapter about
music. Real country music – Classic. Not what today is passed off as country
Kids liked to hear the bell from the ice cream truck
I love to hear the sound of my dog, Gabi, snoring gently beside the bedJim Stamp, February 02, 2022
